Camp Life

Have you ever wondered what it is like to be a field archaeologist and live for weeks or months together in a field camp?  How do we live, what do we eat, how do we spend our time when we aren’t working? Camp Life offers a glimpse of life in the field at Tamsagbulag.

Living Together with Herds

Herder-Pasture-Livestock are the three pillars of pastoralist life in Mongolia.  Herd animals are gently tamed from birth, treasured and cared for by herders.  The relationship is a mutual one where the lives of each are dedicated to providing sustenance and protection to the other.  The role of animals is fundamental to survival in northern climates where there are few edible plant foods; even before herding, big-game hunting was critical.  We explore this relationship in Living Together with Herds.

The Story Is in the Soil

When it comes to understanding how people used a site in the past, the Story is in the Soil.  Geoarchaeologists are crucial to archaeological excavations.  Chemical and microscopic analysis of soils can tell us things that are otherwise invisible to a naked eye, like the presence of animals, where household activities took place, and even where people walked.
